Sunday Bead Bloggers
Yesterday was my one year anniversary of reuniting with my daughter. Hard to believe a year has passed, it seems so long ago that I sent off an email introducing myself as her Birth Mother only to get a reply within 15 mins… A ton of coincidences and a few hours later were getting to know each other. Happy Anniversary again Moe! While my intentions for today were good, my follow thru wasn’t. I’m still working on a couple of class samples that I wanted to get done yesterday. Can’t rush the creative muse! So, I’m taking a break now and doing some blog reading with this weeks Bead Bloggers! A Bead A Day Are you thinking of branching out into polymer clay work? Back from Bead Fest
I have returned from Bead Fest! The best things about Bead Fest were meeting lots of awesome designers and bead makers, some for the first time, and some who I only get to see at shows. It really is the people who make all the hardships of a show worth the effort. My buddy Diane Hawkey and I did as much schmoozing as we could, watching each other’s booths, and going out for a couple of fancy and fun dinners. I had a good response to my newest stamped designs, and sold out of a few of them, which was encouraging. I ended up drawing and inking about a dozen new designs for stamps which I will be working on today. I bought some supplies for my holiday jewelry and some new items that I hope will inspire me to get back into designing for articles. As you may have gathered, the show was not so great financially for me. It was definitely not as bad as it could have been, as I covered my expenses, but not by much.

Bead Table Wednesday
Today on the table, I have some ingredients to make more Hinged Pendants with Shimmer Keys and Vintaj Arte Metal hinge components. I ended up making two of the pendants, but I only used one of the keys pictured. One of the other keys ended up in a necklace, but I didn’t take a pic of the ingredients of that one. Here are my ingredients for Lorelei’s Fusion Beads Reader Challenge Still expecting another couple of parts for that, but it was good to get it all laid out. I really like BTWs because it forces me to spend a little time in the beading studio, which I don’t often get to do. Of course, with the state of my studio at the moment (see above…ouch) I had to do some major cleaning before I made anything. I spent about 2 hours sorting, gathering more scrap silver to send to the refinery, and daydreaming. But I did make one full necklace and two pendants, and my table is ready for another work session soon!

Beads Santa Fe, NM
In the 70s, my sister and I tried making drawstring leather purses out of shammies on which we had sewn glass beads in Native American patterns a project from McCall’s Needlework, I think. It was tricky to keep the lines of bead work straight, and the design became more and more wonky as we progressed. Sally finished hers and it was pretty cute I became frustrated and gave up. After seeing all the lovely beading in Taos and Santa Fe, I got it in my head to give beading another try. I thought I might make some of the beaded alphabet letters I posted in 2009, or maybe even another Native American pattern. It might even be fun to try some of the smaller Anne Orr floral designs. At home I have an antique Iroquois beaded flat purse from the late 1800s a gift to my mother from her aunt and it has lovely beaded flowers on both sides. I’ll have to take a photo of it when I get home. There was a great little hole-in-the-wall bead shop in Santa Fe where I found everything I needed.

Mini Bead-beater to Extract DNA for Molecular Analysis
In the latest Lab on a Chip , researchers from the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT), South Korea, published a new method of extracting DNA from gram-positive bacteria for molecular diagnostics. DNA is often extracted using a bead-beater, an aggressive device used in many laboratories to disrupt cellular material with small ceramic beads and a lot of force. The samples are agitated at about 2000 oscillations per minute and, as a side effect, heat 10 degrees due to collisions of these beads. The new system uses two glass plates around a PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) membrane to form a microfluidic chip. The device contains channels, valves and a pneumatic inlet to facilitate pneumatic vibrations of the membrane. Beads are added in a chamber where they are accelerated by the deflection of the membrane. The DNA is then extracted from the bead-beaten lysed cells and available for molecular identification in a PCR-based diagnostic system.

Art Bead Scene February Challenge…
The prompt for this month’s Art Bead Scene Challenge is the painting, “Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose” by John Singer Sargent. Although I’ve been busily scrambling around to meet deadlines, answer emails and catch back up after the Gem Shows and teaching, I wanted to take some time to create something for this challenge. I love the painting and its luminosity. I can almost smell the heady fragrance of the flowers in the garden and feel the cool of the early summer’s evening. I don’t use a lot of pink in my work, so I’m always looking for a creative challenge to force myself to utilize it in a design. This was the perfect opportunity to encourage me to expand my creative horizons. Above is the bracelet that I created. It is composed of a mix of art beads; the ceramic floral focal is from Golem Studio , the enameled flowers are from C-Koop Beads , and the fine pewter floral toggle is from my family at Green Girl Studios

Sneaky Covers for Crimp Beads
I’m not one to use crimp covers, they just aren’t my style. Usually I let my crimps hang out wild and free, but sometimes they distract from a design. Like in the example above where the stones attach to the chain, a quick and easy solution .

Gaea By the Sea…
Icall this bracelet, “Gaea By the Sea” . I was inspired by the beautiful ceramic beads with the blue-green glaze from Gaea Ceramic Beads . I paired the ceramic beads with faceted teal-colored pearls, tortoiseshell Czech glass rondelles, and Swarovski crystals. I selected the satin indicolite and the ABx2 aqua colored crystals to add a little sparkle and enhance the oceanic colors. To pull everything together, I used a sterling silver toggle from my family. I love how all the dangles really add movement and life to this piece. I think the ceramic beads really make this bracelet come together. While Gaea is on my mind, don’t forget to drop by her Etsy shop for her HUGE summer sale ! You can also stop by this week’s Thursday Giveaway and enter to win your own ceramic bead set. Michelle Mach is also hosting a giveaway on her blog in conjunction with the participants of the NEW fall Stringing issue.

They come courtesy of Melanie and her online shop . Melanie is a talented designer and component maker who always seems to be in the vanguard of jewelry design. She has a gift for taking the cultural pulse and creating really unique pieces that seem ahead of the current fads and trends. She was one of the first designers to really embrace Steampunk and adapt it from a literary-based fringe movement into a viable style that was brought to the forefront of the beading and jewelry world. When she started working with Steampunk, only a handful of people knew what it was… now , if you Google it, there are over 26 million results. The great thing about Melanie’s components is that they are so versatile.
